Scope 1 & Scope 2

From utility bills and fleet data to audited numbers

Scope 1 covers every direct emission source your facilities control — stationary combustion, mobile combustion, process emissions, and fugitive releases. Scope 2 covers the electricity and heat you purchase from the grid. Circulyft ingests utility invoices, ERP fuel records, and fleet data to calculate both from the same feed, applying EPA Table C-1 and eGRID factors with no manual allocation or formula work.

Scope 1 Sources

Every Scope 1 source — stationary, mobile, process, and fugitive

GHG Protocol Corporate Standard classifies Scope 1 into four source types: stationary combustion, mobile combustion, process emissions, and fugitive emissions. The table below shows each source, its standard data input, and which emission factor Circulyft applies — with the coverage method for each.

Emission Source Category Common Data Input Emission Factor Reference Coverage
Natural gas boilers and furnaces Stationary combustion Utility invoice, meter read, ERP fuel record EPA Table C-1 (NG combustion) Live integration
Diesel generators and backup power Stationary combustion Fuel purchase records, tank level logs EPA Table C-1 (distillate fuel) Live integration
Company fleet vehicles (diesel/gasoline) Mobile combustion Fleet management system, fuel card records EPA Mobile Combustion Live integration
Forklifts and on-site equipment Mobile combustion Equipment fuel logs, ERP maintenance records EPA Mobile Combustion — off-road CSV import
Industrial process emissions Process emissions Production throughput, reaction chemistry data IPCC Tier 2 process factors CSV import
Refrigerant leaks (HFCs, HCFCs) Fugitive emissions Refrigerant purchase and charge records IPCC AR6 GWP values CSV import
Fire suppression systems Fugitive emissions Discharge and recharge records IPCC AR6 GWP values Estimation
Coal and biomass combustion Stationary combustion Fuel purchase records, tonnage consumed EPA Table C-1 (solid fuels) CSV import
Scope 2 Methods

Market-based and location-based — both methods, one invoice, one run.

GHG Protocol Corporate Standard requires dual-method Scope 2 reporting: location-based using grid average emission factors, and market-based using contractual instruments such as RECs or supplier-specific rates. ESRS E1-6 requires both. Circulyft calculates both from the same utility data in the same calculation run — no separate worksheet, no manual reconciliation.

Location-Based Method
Grid average emission factors
Uses eGRID regional emission factors based on where your facility is physically located. Reflects the average carbon intensity of the electricity grid in your region. Required when market instruments are not available or when reporting under certain frameworks that mandate location-based disclosure.
eGRID subregion factors updated annually from EPA
Market-Based Method
Contractual instruments and RECs
Uses emission factors from energy attribute certificates (RECs, GOs), power purchase agreements, or supplier-specific rates. Reflects the carbon intensity of the specific electricity you've contracted — typically lower than grid average if you hold renewable energy certificates. Preferred for companies with clean energy procurement strategies.
